As leaders and coaches, we are conduits of energy. Have you noticed the spark of energy within you flagging? Perhaps you (like me) are guilty of waiting until the battery is dead before recharging it.

As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Spirituality is a broad concept, encompassing a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves and a search for meaning in life. This universal human experience touches us all. Spiritual experiences can be sacred, transcendent, or simply a deep sense of feeling alive and interconnected.

Energy is often linked to a sense of spiritual connection. When disconnected, we may struggle with depression, anxiety and hopelessness, and our relationships may feel strained.

Do you recognize these signs of a spiritual void?

  • Emotional emptiness: A deep sense of hollowness that material possessions, achievements, or relationships can\’t fill
  • Lack of purpose: Feeling a lack of meaning, questioning one\’s existence and place in the world
  • Disconnection: A sense of being separated from self, a higher power, or the universe, leading to isolation and loneliness
  • Search for fulfillment: A drive to seek deeper meaning and connection, leading to self-discovery and spiritual exploration

What can trigger a spiritual void?

  • Traumatic experiences: Loss of a loved one, serious illness, or other traumas
  • Existential questions: Deep, unresolved questions about existence and purpose
  • Materialism: A focus on material success at the expense of spiritual growth

Countering the void

  • Practicing reflection: Creating space to reflect with self and others through the senses
  • Seeking connection: Reconnecting with nature, engaging in spiritual practices, or finding community
  • Exploring spirituality: Exploring different practices to connect more deeply with self, others and the world

Recognizing and addressing a spiritual void is crucial for personal and collective well-being. This experience can be a turning point. In reconnecting with our bodies, mind, purpose, and the universal energy around us, we can overcome the emptiness and lead with renewed vitality and clarity.
