Woman offering sparkler unlocking transformation through joy

Team coaches do more than just facilitate collaboration. We nurture transformation, supporting teams as they face challenges, push boundaries, and navigate complex changes that can strain energy and resilience. Joy is a resource that can uplift and sustain teams in the midst of challenges.

Joy is a deep well of energy that, when accessed, can transform team dynamics, improve collaboration, and support long-lasting change. By integrating practices of gratitude, connection, and purpose, team coaches can help teams tap into this reservoir of joy, no matter how turbulent the waters of change may be.

In supporting teams to access the resource of joy, we can explore three essential practices that align with the ICF team coaching competencies: presence, co-creating trust and safety, and evoking transformation.

Presence: the power of attention and gratitude

One of the core competencies of team coaching is presence, being fully aware and responsive to the team’s needs, dynamics, and underlying emotions. Presence isn’t just about what you observe in the moment. It’s about where you direct your attention as a coach.

To focus through the lens of presence, ask yourself these questions:

  • What are you noticing as you guide teams through change?
  • What subtle shifts in energy, mood, or behavior are emerging?
  • Are parts of the team withdrawing?
  • Is there a shift in how the team approaches challenges?

By tuning into these nuances, you can reveal them to the team, so that team members can get curious and respond in ways that support the team’s overall well-being and progress.

Gratitude also plays a role in your presence as a coach. When you model and encourage gratitude – whether it’s for the team demonstrating behaviours that they have aspired to, or for moments of vulnerability – you create an atmosphere that invites joy.

Gratitude shifts the energy of the room, encouraging the team to appreciate not just the outcome, but the journey itself.

Practicing gratitude can reframe difficult moments. By encouraging the team to focus on what they’re grateful for, you help them access a sense of joy.

Joy is especially needed when things aren\’t going smoothly. Shifting the perspective can be a powerful tool for resilience and creativity. When teams feel supported and recognized, they are more open to innovation and more adaptable to change.

Connection: co-creating trust through appreciation and collaboration

Connection is vital for team effectiveness. As a team coach, you play a key role in fostering those connections, aligning with the ICF team coaching competency of co-creating trust and safety.

To build trust, teams need to feel valued, supported, and connected to one another. This is where joy can become a transformative force.

One way to strengthen connections within a team is through appreciation. Recognize and celebrate the diverse energies and roles within the team. How are the roles of visionary, organizer, collaborator, and driver being leveraged as a team? Each role brings unique strengths that contribute to the whole. By fostering a culture of appreciation, you help the team see and value these contributions.

When you encourage team members to appreciate each other and the entity of the team itself, you lay the foundation for trust. Trust grows when individuals feel recognized and safe within the group, knowing their contributions are seen and valued. We know the value that openness and psychological safety plays in fostering authentic collaboration and honest communication. By emphasizing the role of appreciation, you support the team\’s ability to co-create trust in a meaningful way.

Appreciation also helps teams navigate conflict. When trust and appreciation are present, teams are more likely to engage in constructive conflict. Differences can be discussed openly and resolved in a way that strengthens the team. This, in turn, fosters deeper connection and a collective sense of joy. Team members feel secure in their relationships with one another.

Appreciation and connection create an environment where trust flourishes, enabling the team to work together with greater harmony and effectiveness. As trust builds, so does the potential for joy to emerge as a shared experience. Imagine the impact in energizing the team’s efforts and sustaining them through change.

Purpose: aligning with integrity and acting as one

Purpose is a powerful motivator for teams. Your role as coach is to help them connect to a deeper sense of meaning in their work. The ICF team coaching competencies emphasize the importance of guiding teams to align with their purpose and values. When teams feel that their work is meaningful, they are more resilient, committed, and joyful in their efforts.

Aligning being and doing to the common team purpose is what binds teams together as one entity. When a team aligns around a shared mission, they function not as a collection of individuals, but as a unified whole. Each person understands how their role contributes to the bigger picture. This sense of collective purpose fosters a powerful connection within the team.

Encouraging teams to reflect on their common purpose can help them navigate the challenges of change with greater integrity. Where is the team living in alignment with its values, and where might it be falling short? These reflective conversations are key to ensuring that the team remains grounded in its purpose, even as it adapts to new circumstances.

Aligning with purpose isn\’t just about big-picture goals; it\’s about day-to-day actions. How does each team member’s role contribute to the team’s overall mission? By helping teams make these connections, you reinforce a sense of shared purpose that fuels joy and engagement. And when the team acts as one, driven by a common purpose, they become more resilient and better equipped to navigate the complexities of change.

Integrity, too, plays a critical role in fostering joy. When teams operate with integrity — staying true to their values and purpose, even when it’s difficult — they create a foundation for lasting joy. Integrity provides the grounding that allows joy to emerge, even in the midst of uncertainty and change.

Team reflection is an essential practice in evoking awareness.

A catalyst for transformation in team coaching

The journey of team coaching is one of transformation. Joy can be a powerful catalyst for that transformation. By cultivating presence through attention and gratitude, co-creating trust through connection and appreciation, and evoking awareness through reflecting on purpose and integrity, you help teams access the deep reservoir of joy that sustains them through change.

Joy creates the energy and resilience needed for sustainable transformation. When teams are joyful, they are more creative, collaborative, and adaptable. They are better equipped to navigate the challenges of change and to embrace the opportunities that come with it.

Consider how you can help teams tap into their well of joy, and remember to tap into your own joy too. In doing so, you create the conditions for growth, innovation, and lasting success. Joy is always available to us, even in the most challenging moments.
